Sebelum kita membahas apakah Akses Kontrol Pintu, terlebih dahulu ita definisikan apakah Akses Kontrol (Acces Control) itu. Akses Kontrol adalah sistem yang dirancang untuk memungkinkan wewenang membatasi pengguna untuk mengakses ke wilayah dan sumber daya dalam fasilitas fisik tertentu atau sistem informasi berbasis komputer. Kita dapat temui dalam penerapan Sistem Akses Kontrol dalam kehidupan sehari-hari misalnya sebuah kunci pada pintu ruangan, pintu gudang, pintu mobil pada dasarnya merupakan suatu bentuk kontrol akses. PIN pada sistem ATM di bank adalah cara lain akses kontrol. Dengan akses kontrol kita dapat membatasi atau mengamankan informasi penting, rahasia, atau sensitif dan peralatan.

Dari definisi akses kontrol tersebut kita dapat mengambil definisi dari Akses kontrol Pintu (Door Acces Control). Akses kontrol pintu adalah sebuah sistem yang dapat atau untuk membatasi pengguna untuk mengakses suatu ruangan dengan menempatkan sistem perangkat kontrol pada pintu. Dalam Akses Kontrol Pintu, kontrol akses merujuk pada praktek membatasi pintu masuk ke properti, bangunan, atau ruang untuk orang yang berwenang.

Akses kontrol ini dapat dilakukan oleh personil seperti penjaga perbatasan, penjaga pintu, pemeriksa tiket, dll, atau dengan perangkat seperti sebuah kunci (Lock). Namun ketika akses kontrol berupa seorang penjaga atau kunci manual mempunyai banyak keterbatasan, kontrol akses elektronik menggunakan sistem komputerisasi atau mirokontroler memecahkan keterbatasan tersebut. Sistem akses kontrol pintu  secara sederhana dipadukan dengan kunci (lock) saat ini telah dikembangkan seperti dipadu dengan sistem kartu (card) misalnya RF ID (Magnetic Card), Smart Card atau kartu lainnya atau yang lebih mutahir dan lebih tinggi tingkat keamanannya seperti sistem biometrik seperti sidik jari (fingerprint), muka (face) tau dengan retina.

Dewasa ini sistem akses kontrol telah berkembang secara signifikan di Indonesia yang di pelopori oleh perusahaan yang mempunyai akses kontrol pintu dengan teknologi sidik jari dan face id. Sisitem akses kontrol ini dapat mengatur secara otomatis sesuai dengan kebutuhan. Sebuah sistem akses kontrol menentukan siapa yang diizinkan masuk atau keluar, di mana mereka diizinkan untuk keluar atau masuk, dan kapan mereka diizinkan untuk masuk atau keluar. Beragam kredensial dapat digunakan untuk menggantikan kunci mekanik. Kontrol akses elektronik sistem memberikan akses berdasarkan perintah yag diberikan berupa sinyal perintah. Ketika akses diberikan, pintu dibuka untuk waktu yang ditentukan dan transaksi tersebut dicatat. Ketika akses ditolak, pintu tetap terkunci dan akses berusaha dicatat. Sistem ini juga akan memantau pintu dan alarm jika pintu dibuka paksa atau dimiliki terbuka terlalu lama setelah dibuka.
